Smooth Program Migration: From S7-200 SMART G1 to New Generation G2 CPU

Upgrade Guide: Migrate S7-200 SMART G1 Projects to New Generation G2 CPU

The new Siemens S7-200 SMART G2 series CPU is officially available. Many system integrators and equipment manufacturers are concerned about project upgrading from the legacy G1 series.

Existing projects programmed on S7-200 SMART G1 can be officially migrated to G2 CPUs.

With STEP 7‑Micro/WIN SMART V3.0 or higher software, you can use the built-in Migrate function to transfer ladder logic, variable tables, PID wizards and communication configurations from G1(V2.8) projects to G2, saving extensive programming work for equipment renovation and retrofit projects.

Important reminders for project upgrade:
  1. Do NOT open the old project directly. Always use the migration function to prevent loss of hardware configuration.
  2. G1 and G2 extension modules are NOT interchangeable. G2 adopts slim blade housing and Push-in terminals, so direct plug-and-play replacement is impossible. Wiring and cabinet layout need rework.
  3. G2 is equipped with dual Ethernet ports and supports up to 16 expansion modules. DP01 communication module is not supported on G2 platform, please adjust your communication scheme in advance.
  4. After migration, complete compilation and carefully verify I/O addresses, high-speed counters and motion control parameters. Full on-site testing is required before operation.

G2 features improved processing speed, larger memory and flexible dual-port networking, ideal for machinery upgrading and production line retrofits.
